I’m switching from a, and I’ve already. Now I’m trying to find Windows 10 replacements for the MacOS software I’ve been using for years. We're covering this journey from all angles:. What drove me to. What to think about when. The challenge of finding. How to get Windows to play nicely.
What treasures await gamers in the. In many ways, the software switch is a lot harder than the hardware switch. Read on for the bad news, the good news, and the compromises involved in jumping one ship for another. The bad news: You can’t take it all with you First, the bad news: Apple has no reason to make it easy for you to leave its walled garden. When you kiss your Mac goodbye, some popular applications will stay behind as well. Apple’s Messages and FaceTime, for instance, aren’t compatible with Windows-based systems. While you can continue using them on your iOS devices, video chats and texting on your laptop are best handled by Skype.
In addition to Windows, the service is available for use on MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Blackberry OS (we’re not here to judge,) making it easy to reach out to everyone in your life, no matter which platform they use. Apple users will also miss the free, high-quality software that all new Apple computers ship with. Pages, Numbers and Keynote?
The same goes for GarageBand and iMovie. If you want to be productive or creative with your new Windows computer, you’ll have to search and, in many cases, pay for new options. It’s not all Apple’s fault.
Despite the vast catalog of software available to Windows users, I’ve surprisingly been unable to find satisfying replacements for many of the apps that Mac users take for granted. For example, I’ve yet to find a task/project management application for my Surface Book that can replace The Omni Group’s, with its contextual interface and stellar adaptability.
The good news: The cloud is your friend PCWorld Apple’s iCloud online suite of applications will help you stay on task until you find the Windows software that’s right for you. Next, the good news: Almost anything in the cloud can come with you. The browser-accessible provides anyone with an Apple account access to online versions of Apple’s Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders apps. Even better, Apple’s full suite of productivity apps, including Pages, Keynote and Numbers, can be accessed here too. (Note that while you can download files from the service to your computer’s local storage, the programs on the website cannot be used without an Internet connection.) You’ll also want to use cloud services to keep your computer and mobile devices in sync (especially if you’re keeping some Apple products in the mix) or provide offsite backup for important documents.
Here are a few options to get you started: PCWorld iCloud for Windows syncs your Apple stuff to your Windows Computer. ICloud If you plan to keep your iPad or iPhone with your new Windows PC, then Apple’s iCloud for Windows app is an absolute must. Once installed, it’ll shuttle your photos and video, email accounts, and bookmarks among devices and provide fast access to your iCloud storage on your computer. All iCloud users get 5GB of storage for free. Additional storage space ranges from between $1 to $20 monthly for 50GB and 2TB, respectively. Not surprisingly, however, I couldn’t find any Windows apps out there with deep iCloud Drive integration.
Microsoft OneDrive Now that you’re using Windows 10, you should try Microsoft OneDrive. A free OneDrive account will net you 5GB of online storage space.
Pay $2 per month for 50GB or $69 per year for 1TB. Microsoft also offers OneDrive apps for Mac, iOS and Android.
Dropbox Dropbox’s cloud storage service is deeply integrated with a wide variety of mobile and desktop applications. I use it daily with my MacBook Pro, Surface Book and iOS devices to back up my files offsite, share work with my editors, and shuttle information among devices.
Dropbox’s free basic account comes with 2GB of storage. This amount of space can be upped at no cost by having your friends and family sign up for the service through a referral link or linking your social media accounts to the service (I’ve snagged 8GB of free additional space using these methods). Another $10 per month nets you 2TB of space. The compromise: Finding similar software Between the good and the bad, there’s the compromise: Finding software that’s similar to what you had before. You’ll likely have the hardest time replacing pro-level applications.
The Mac’s, for example, costs $280. Windows-compatible alternatives like or, when armed with a comparable feature set will, set you back $499 and $599, respectively. After all the dough I just dropped on a new laptop, these additional costs killed some of my platform-switching buzz. Productivity applications proved easier to replace. Below are the ones I found that work for me. Maybe they’ll work for you too.
Email clients PCWorld Mailbird is a customizable multi-client email application that can be used for free or with premium features. Note-taking Available for Macs, Windows computers Android and iOS devices, Microsoft OneNote is an amazing, free-form note-taking app. When paired with your Microsoft account, OneNote can sync notes among your various devices in a way that apps like Evernote and Notes and other information collection apps can only dream of. It accepts handwritten content (using a stylus or your finger as an input device).
Typing can be started and moved anywhere on a page. Screenshots, images and audio input can all live within a single note. You can annotate and mark it all up.
Best of all, it’s free to download for iOS, MacOS, and Windows devices. Productivity software PCWorld LibreOffice will let you get work done for the low, low price of free. As I mentioned earlier, iCloud.com offers all the Apple productivity apps you could want right in your browser. Microsoft and Google offer similar services, too. But if you’re like me and prefer to save local copies of your work, you’ll want to try these. Microsoft Office: Microsoft Office has been the standard for productivity for decades for both Mac and PC users.
There’s a good chance your new Windows 10 machine came with a free trial that includes Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, Access and PowerPoint. Once that’s trial’s complete, you can continue to use it for just under $11 per month. This plan’ll put Microsoft’s full-featured apps on five computers, five tablets and five phones, making it easy to give your family everything they need to stay productive. LibreOffice 5: While it lacks the visual polish of Microsoft Office, LibreOffice is free and supports a wide variety of file types, including those used by Microsoft Office.

Scrivener: Leading Features and Benefits Scrivener Can Replace Word If you’re a writer, you must compose your manuscript using some type of software -that is, unless, you prefer an anachronistic tool such as a pen or manual typewriter.
Most writers rely on a word processing program, in most cases Word, either for Windows or Mac. Word is comprehensive and useful software, but it’s not made specifically for writers.
The same is true for any other word processing program you might be using. Scrivener, on the other hand, is made exclusively for writers. So, when you sit down to do your writing, you can simply click on Scrivener rather than Word. Helps You Focus and Meet Your Goals One of the biggest challenges facing writers is to stay on track and achieve daily goals. Scrivener has several features that help you do just that. You can set targets for words or characters for each writing session and view how far you are from your objective.
Mac Vs Pc Blogs
You can set Project Targets for both individual sessions and the entire project. For example, if you’re writing a 100,000-word novel and aim to write at least 1,000 words per session, you can always check to see what you’ve accomplished so far. Scrivener also gives you a way to block out distractions. Razer Mice. If you’re like many people, you’re constantly tempted by social media, email and the latest headlines streaming across the web.

Research and Organization If you’re writing a novel or other long document, you probably have lots of notes, ideas and research connected with your project. It can be difficult to keep track of everything. Having to find a certain note, link or image can really slow you down and halt your momentum. Scrivener lets you import files, links and documents so that you have everything at your fingertips.
This is especially useful if you write on multiple devices. This way, everything you need will be in one place whenever you want to write. Tools for Storyboarding is a technique many writers use to organize the chapters or scenes in their book (or script).
The traditional, pre-internet way to do this was to write out scenes on index cards. That way, you can look at individual scenes and decide which order to put them in. Doing this on a conventional word processing program isn’t too easy. If for example, you write a new document for each scene on Word, you’d have to open up each document separately to see them. Scrivener, though, has a tool called The Corkboard, which lets you view multiple documents as index cards. This lets you get an overview of your book, giving you ideas on what to add, delete or rearrange.
Outliner Outlining is an important function in writing, whether you’re composing a novel, nonfiction book, term paper or screenplay. Scrivener’s Outliner lets you organize your text in the way that’s most convenient for you. You’re able to create folders for as many levels as you need.
For example, your book may be organized with folders for Sections, Chapters, Scenes and Actions. When you want to go back and rewrite, edit or expand something, you click on the appropriate folder and make the changes. Learning how to use the Outliner may take a little practice, but it’s a tool that can help you organize your writing. Formatting for Self-Publishing Many writers today self-publish on Kindle or other online platforms.
If you compose your book using Scrivener, you don’t have to worry about getting the formatting right. You can export your document to formats such as MOBI or EPUB for Amazon. You can also export it into other formats, including PDF, TXT, RTF and DOC.
This makes it convenient if you want to publish your book in multiple formats. Pricing and Versions Scrivener comes in both Mac and PC versions. I’m reluctant on buying anything I don’t understand or not familiar with its functionality. Yes, I am one of those terrible people who make a pretty good living selling “books” written fro the Kindle.
I have put together a system that allows me to generally FLY through the creation of “book” so for anything that could supercharge my workflow, I sit up and take notice. So I am writing you today. I am generally regarded to be perhaps the only living relative of the great Ebenezer Scrooge, so I am always, perhaps even more often than that, interested in a bargain. As I see it, I can get the Windows 10 version Scrivener for $40 less a 25% coupon. I also believe I will get a coupon for 33% off Scrivener Unleashed. Is my understanding correct? Is that the best deal or are there bundles that exist that would be a better deal?
Ok, great introduction on the video, great and all, but is there any of those videos for those that have a PC? The software isn’t always the same.
I’m reluctant on buying anything I don’t understand or not familiar with its functionality. Seeing one of these in the PC version would put my mind at ease and help me feel better about purchasing it. I currently use Word and its never failed me, but I think I’m outgrowing it since my books are 500 pages + now. Its really starting to slow down so I separated the chapters by folders so word doesn’t have to take on such a load.
I tried both Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive. The sync wasn't the problem, it was importing and exporting from the Windows Scrivener to the Mac. The files would be there, but each version wanted them in a different structure. I would import and they wouldn't be where I wanted them in Scrivener. I would also have to remember to do a File, Sync.wait for it to sync, and then go to the other computer, make sure the files did the sync, and then import. I mostly do screenwriting so I use Scrivener on the Mac for all research.
I write scripts with the fountain syntax that I save to Box, which keeps it in sync on both computers. I write the scripts in Sublime Text (Mac and PC version). I use Highland on the Mac to make sure it looks correct, and either export to Final Draft or PDF depending on who is going to read it.
Scrivener for Mac as a feature so you can sync your files to an external folder. You can sync to a folder in your Dropbox and have that folder sync to your other computers. Scrivener for Windows does not have the sync feature. You can only import or export the files from your project. I tend to break things up quite a bit and create a new file per scene or I might keep characters all in separate files. When I sync those to the external folder, it works well.
When I import the group of files into the Windows Scrivener, it doesn't put the in the same structure. I have to go and reorganize the project.
I have 50 files in each project, and 20 different projects. The projects themselves are not compatible. So I would have to save 100 individual files, and then open them in the corresponding project on the opposite OS. Scrivener for Mac OS X About the project file: While this is listed as a Mac resource, it is only listed as such because the project file itself has been designed for the Mac, and will not function properly on Windows (at least for the purposes of compilation). As a reference resource, it could be used on Windows as well.
Both manuals come from the same project file.
